Throws have become an important element of decorating. They can transform any room into a vibrant personal statement with alluring textures, daring colors or warm sophistication. A beautiful cashmere throw draped casually over a chair or sofa is a welcoming touch in any room. There's nothing cozier than curling up on the couch with warm chenille throw. Chenille is very soft and warm, but it's also quite fashionable right now, making it the perfect fabric for a throw. Use a fleece throw blanket on a sofa to add some texture and color to a room, or just curl up under it when reading a good book. Throw blankets are a warm, luxurious, and simple way to introduce a new fabric or color to a room. Faux fur throws can add a touch of glamour.

Throws vary in size and come in a huge array of fabrics, textures and colors--chenille, cotton, appliqué, velvet, beaded, handpainted, wool, cashmere, etc. In selecting the type of throw you want, consider the use to which it will be put and the measurements you would like. If you and your family plan to use it regularly while bundling up with a book or sitting in front of the TV, you will want to make sure that the fabric is easily washable. You may or may not want to have silk fleece blankets with elegant fringe or edged with charmeuse that will complicate washing. One current trend is the rustic elegance of American woolen patterns. The elegance of a designer handpainted throw or a themed throw has the power to transform any room all by itself.

Why do we call them “throws”? To achieve a casual and informal look, you toss a throw over the back of a chair, the arm of a sofa, the end of a bed or even on the dining room table. The art of a throw is in the actual motion of throwing. Unfold the throw, ridding it of the folds and wrinkles, and find a point just off-center. You should not fold a throw in half making it look far too formal and proper. A throw is a popular, updated dash of color and should look casual and vibrant. Hold the throw, allowing it to hang, and just flick the wrist, tossing the throw on a sofa or chair. Leave the throw just as it landed.  Throws can be used to cover stains, rips, or other imperfections on sofa or chair fabric. A throw can be a marvelous decoration and covers a multitude of shortcomings.
