Nothing is more vital to a good night's sleep than a pillow. Pillow selection is a matter of personal
preference and you want to make sure to match your pillow to your sleeping style. Pillows provide critical neck and
spine support
You have many choices for the size and fill material for the perfect pillow. Look for a pillow that can be fluffed and
squashed as much as you like, and that has the thickness and firmness you find comfortable. Natural filled pillows, such as
pure down and down/feather blend pillows offer the most comfort, longest wear, and most adjustability and considered by many
to be the most desirable. However, they are not suitable for people who are allergic to feathers.
Synthetic and polyester pillows are generally solid but may be textured, shaped, or wrapped in batting for added softness.
They are durable and inexpensive and mimic the performance and resiliency of down. Some of these pillows are shaped to offer
support for specific parts of the body. Economical latex foam pillows are resistant to dust mites and mildew but less
comfortable than down or synthetic pillows. Replace them every two to four years, or whenever they lose their shape and bounce.
This is a good choice for people who are allergic to down.
Foam rubber pillows are an inexpensive pillow considered hypoallergenic that can be sculpted for specific sleep style
support. Foam rubber wears out quickly and will need to be replaced every year or two. For those with more specific sleeping
needs, foam is used in therapeutic pillows such as memory foam pillows, chiropractic pillows, or lumbar support pillows. If
you prefer the plush softness of down pillows, the extra firmness in a foam version will probably prove to be uncomfortable.
Decorative Pillows
Just like the right jewelry can spice up an outfit, decorative throw pillows can do incredible things for a living room.
Decorative bed pillows are meant to add more color and style to the bedroom. You may have seen pictures of a beautifully decorated
bed piled high with pillows of many shapes and styles.
Decorative accent pillows can be square, round, or rectangular and average in size between 12 and 18 inches in diameter.
Accent pillows inject style onto a bed. They can be made of expensive fabrics or embellished with beading or trims. You may
have seen other pillow styles interestingly shaped such as boudoir pillows and neck rolls or bolsters that are tube-shape
pillows designed to support the head and neck while resting or reading. European pillows are large, 26-inch-square pillows.
They can be propped up against a headboard for support and used decoratively with a European sham or pillow cover. Pillow
shams are used to provide that decorator effect to pillows. Although they may be used over rumpled sleeping pillows,
they are most often filled with separate high-loft bed pillows and used as decoration only -- placed in front of the pillows
used for sleeping. Pillow shams are generally sized to fit regular bed pillows in standard, queen, or king sizes.
